The Lady Judith Solomon Award

Thanks to the enormous generosity of the Solomon family we are now inviting applications for a new research award in memory of Lady Judith Solomon. This award is in addition to our grants rounds and highlights our commitment to building a stronger and broader research community.

The Lady Judith Solomon Award

Dialysis is a life-saving treatment, but it is gruelling, time-consuming and is also associated with other significant health risks. The Lady Judith Solomon Award is an open call to the research community for an award of up to £150,000 to drive improvements in dialysis and undertake research in one of the following areas: 

  • Making dialysis kinder and more tolerable
  • Improving outcomes for dialysis patients
  • Reducing the fear and anxiety associated with dialysis

Type of research:

This award will be made for a new research project or to support post-graduate research. We invite interested researchers to provide us with a scientific outline of the research proposal, budget and lay description using the form below.

Applications will be screened for goodness of fit to this call, ahead of review by an independent panel which will include expert patients.  

We know this work is urgent, so our aim is to make this award as swiftly as possible. Application deadline extended to 12pm, Friday 10 June 2022.

Key information:

Who can apply? An established investigator may apply for costs, but not salary. A new investigator may apply for costs and salary.

What’s the budget? Maximum total budget available £150,000. Awards in the region of £50,000 to £150,000 will be considered.

What can I apply for? Budget may be spent on consumables and salary / or for a post-graduate researcher / Allied Health Professional.

In which area? Dialysis, but specifically:  

    • Making dialysis kinder and more tolerable 
    • Improving outcomes for dialysis patients 
    • Reducing the fear and anxiety associated with dialysis 

Where? Within the UK

Patients and parents/carers participate fully in our review process, for our named awards therefore an appropriate lay summary and explanation of the likely impact for patients must be provided. 

All applicants must be resident in the United Kingdom and the research must take place in a UK establishment. 

Applications for the Lady Judith Solomon award will not be considered in any other rounds this year.
