Workshop information
Representatives from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Medical Research Council (MRC) will attend and present at the event, sharing perspectives on relevant research priorities, interdisciplinary opportunities and potential routes for future support.
Chronic kidney disease is a major and growing health challenge. Important opportunities remain to detect it earlier, make better use of routinely collected health data, apply advances in artificial intelligence responsibly and translate promising ideas into improvements in care and outcomes.
This research workshop and sandpit forms part of a connected programme of activity. A separate political and senior leaders’ roundtable is planned for October to identify important policy, healthcare and implementation barriers. This will be followed by a focused, invitation-only scientific roundtable on the morning of 3 November, where specialists will begin translating those priorities into scientific and research challenges.
The wider afternoon event will build on these discussions by bringing together a broader multidisciplinary community to:
- Explore the most important challenges relating to early detection and AI in kidney disease.
- Develop policy and healthcare priorities into focused, researchable questions.
- Identify where data science, engineering and emerging technologies could make the greatest difference.
- Develop connections between the kidney, data science and engineering communities.
- Consider opportunities for future research, funding and collaboration.

We welcome interest from:
- Kidney researchers and clinicians.
- Data scientists, AI researchers and engineers.
- Researchers working in early detection, diagnostics or health technologies.
- Health data, implementation and health services researchers.
- People interested in applying their expertise to kidney disease for the first time.
- Representatives from relevant funding, healthcare, patient and public organisations.
You do not need to be an established kidney researcher to attend. We particularly welcome participants who can bring relevant methods, technologies and perspectives from other disciplines.
