Danny Howard to run London Marathon for Kidney Research UK

Sarah Williams | 19 January 2018

BBC Radio 1 DJ and dance music producer, Danny Howard, is one of 73 people running the Virgin Money London Marathon 2018 for Kidney Research UK.

Danny is running the 26-mile race across London in memory of his dad, Chris, who sadly passed away eight years ago after spending five years on dialysis. “This is my first event for Kidney Research UK and my first attempt at a marathon,” said Danny. “The marathon route passes near to where I live and I’ve been to watch it for the last three years; the atmosphere is amazing. Every year I’m inspired to do it, but I did nothing about it, then last year something caught hold of me and I knew I had to enter.

The 30-year old DJ is managing to fit his training in between his primetime Friday night slot on Radio 1, his producing and tours dates gigging around the UK.

“I helped my dad with his home dialysis for over five years and during that time watched the treatment become less and less effective. So I want to do my bit to contribute to the great work they do at Kidney Research UK to give more people, who suffer the same as my dad did, a better chance and better support.”

Sandra Currie, Kidney Research UK’s chief executive, said: “Kidney disease can affect anyone at any time. Currently there is no cure, only treatments like dialysis and transplant. Many of our marathon runners have been affected by the disease in one way or another, either being a patient themselves or, like Danny, seeing a relative or friend go through diagnosis and treatment.

“I know each and every one of them has been training for many months for this event, aiming to raise money for lifesaving research. We’ll be with them on the day – cheering them through the miles right to the finish line, where we’ll help celebrate their amazing achievements!”

The Virgin Money London Marathon takes place on Sunday 22 April. Kidney Research UK’s cheering stations are at miles 18 and 25.
