Kidney Research UK, the charity dedicated to funding research into kidney disease, is delighted to announce it has received a major grant from the Morrisons Foundation. The £20,000 award has been made to support patients with kidney diseases from across the UK.

Kidney Research UK’s patient engagement programme provides a UK-wide resource for kidney patients to come together, often at a local level, into small groups or networks which provide opportunities for information sharing, peer support and a means to influence the development of effective patient-centred research.

Part of the charity’s engagement programme includes Patient Information Days, where patients, carers, clinicians and researchers are able to meet together to have informative discussion in supportive, friendly environments. These days are also key in engaging patients with research.

“Evidence shows that patients who know more about their disease do better – both physically and mentally – and here at Kidney Research UK patients are at the heart of the strategic direction of our research,” said Sarah Harwood, Patient Involvement Coordinator at the charity.

“This very generous Morrisons Foundation grant will ensure that kidney disease patients right across the UK will benefit from research that is better informed by patient opinion and experience, and therefore more effective. This will lead to better personal support and care that will improve patients’ lives, and facilitate the drive for change.”

The cheque was presented on behalf of the Morrisons Foundation by Tracey Rapley, Community Champion at the Lincoln Road Peterborough store, who said: “We were delighted to present this cheque to Kidney Research UK, which funds research into finding cures for kidney diseases.”

The Morrison Foundation was set up by Morrisons supermarkets in 2015 and gets most of its funding from the sale of single-use carrier bags. Since launching, over £10 million has been donated to charities for community projects.
