Big Lottery Fund Back to main news

Kidney Research UK is helping in the battle to reduce the UK’s salt consumption by supporting Consensus Action on Salt and Health’s (CASH) 11th National Salt Awareness Week, running from 1st – 7th February 2010.

CASH is aware that salt is associated with health problems such as high blood pressure and high blood pressure accelerates kidney damage.

Kidney Research UK encourages the public to protect themselves from kidney disease by...

  •  Monitoring your blood pressure regularly
  • Maintaining a diet low in salt by reading the labels of foods, choosing lower salt ingredients and not adding salt during cooking or at the table.
  • Keep a healthy body weight and don’t smoke

Kidney Research UK is the leading UK charity funding research that focuses on the prevention, treatment and management of kidney disease. It also dedicates its work to improving patient care and raising awareness of kidney disease.

Right now, the lives of over three million people in the UK are threatened by chronic kidney disease. Kidney Research UK can only fund lifesaving research with your help.

Kidney Research UK feels that it’s really important that everybody understands the importance of a diet that is low in salt and it’s link to kidney disease therefore we fully support this national salt awareness week.

The focus of National Salt Awareness Week 2010 is ‘Salt and Your Health’.  Many people are aware that salt can damage their health, but do not know it is linked to serious health conditions such as stroke, heart disease, osteoporosis, stomach cancer, obesity and kidney disease which can affect anyone.

Graham MacGregor, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Chairman of CASH comments, “the evidence linking salt to conditions such as stomach cancer, osteoporosis, kidney disease, obesity and stroke has been building for years and now must not be ignored.  We should all reduce our salt intake to the maximum recommended target of 6 grams a day or less if we are to minimise the risk of developing these serious health problems.”
