In 2006 I was studying my degree at Liverpool University when I became unwell. My appendix burst and after many many complications my kidneys failed and I ended up on dialysis. For many months I was very unwell and would not be considered for transplant. In 2007 my fiancee Steve offered to donate, not actually expecting it to happen! Luckily our blood types are compatable, and although our tissue typing isn't great it can be controlled with drugs. In 2008 we decided to go back to University to do our Masters degrees and put off the transplant until now, so I could get stronger and have a year without any operations! The whole time I was at University I dialysed three times a week for 4 hours at a time (HD). Now I have passed my degree and am awaiting my transplant in a few weeks.
Quiz Night Success
The Cheshire West and Wirral Fundraisers held their first event of 2012 on the 20th March. We had a quiz and raffle night at the Little Sutton Library, Cheshire. What a night! There were laughs and groans at our questions, cheers and surprise at our raffle prizes and even a good old giggle at the wooden spoon for the losing team. We raised a whopping £524.35 for Kidney Research UK. Thanks to all who got involved and helped out, and congratulations to everyone who won!
I met some lovely people, including other dialysis patients, local councillors and friends I haven't seen for some time. Everyone also enjoyed the cakes my sister and I baked and decorated for the occasion.
It's nice to give something back, even if it's in the hope that the research can eventually grow me a new kidney! Dialysis is going fine, just plodding along as usual, having something to look forward to helps me to forget about the endless routine of going to the hospital!
I need to start planning our next event now, people asked when the next quiz night was, which was nice, but after all that work, I might have to leave it a few months!
Happy 2012
Happy 2012 everyone! Here's to a happy, healthy new year. After spending Boxing day evening in A&E with a pulse of 120 and a skyrcoketing temperature, I know I want to spend as little time in hospital as possible! Other than my dialysis of course! I hope to raise lots of money for Kidney Research this year and also do lots of campaigning for the charity. Someone on our unit got a kidney on christmas day! The lucky things. Hopefully a few more of us will get the call this year too. Hope you all had a great christmas and are having a great start to your January. xxx
Fashion Show
Wow the fashion show was amazing. Ian Pulseton-Davies (Owen from Corrie so I am told!) was there auctioning off some of the casts dresses and yours truly strutted her stuff in the gorgeous Foxy Frox and Love Frocks outfits! Was nice to have my hair and make up done, made me forget about the dialysis I had the next day! The gorgeous Charlene (second piccy, on the catwalk!) organised it all and it all went off without a hitch! I didn't even fall over. The money raised was split between two charities so for Kidney Research £1200 was raised! Congratulations to all the gorgeous models, and thanks for letting me take part! xx
