Michael Nicholson is Professor of Transplant Surgery at the University of Leicester, and has been a Consultant Transplant Surgeon for the last fourteen years. He gained the degrees of BmedSci with First Class Honours in 1980 and BMBS with Distinction in 1982 from the University of Nottingham, became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1986 and obtained his MD (Leicester) in 1990.

His training in transplantation was performed in Leicester and Oxford under the aegis of Sir Peter Bell and Sir Peter Morris, and this led to many clinical interests, most notably kidney transplantation from non-heart-beating donors.

During his career, Professor Nicholson has received several awards and prizes, including most recently the Moynihan Prize and Medal from the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. In addition to serving on the editorial boards of Transplantation and The British Journal of Surgery, he also directs a research team with interests in a wide variety of transplant research areas. His published work includes more than 230 peer-reviewed papers.
